2K Recruits Apex Legends Producer to Revitalize Challenged Hero Shooter Ambitious Title
2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the development team at 31st Union, which is currently working on the upcoming third-person roguelike extraction-shooter known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Comes After Mixed Reception
Brinkman takes on the leadership position at 31st Union following the exit of previous head Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' disappointing early showing last fall.
Recently, 2K president David Ismailer notified staff about this organizational change through an official communication, which emphasized that early feedback sessions had revealed the need for a more defined direction.
Ismailer stated that the developers is now refining the project with a refreshed approach, aiming to better meet player expectations.
A Pattern of Strategic Hires
The news echoes a comparable move taken by the publisher in the summer, when they brought on an industry veteran from Blizzard to assist with the beloved franchise studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the complete content from Ismailer's memo:
Dear Team—
I understand you all just wrapped up your gathering - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a note, I stated the following: “I believe in this team. You all are some of the most driven and talented creators we have had the pleasure to collaborate with - and we’re excited for that relationship to persist.”
Through your commitment and flexibility, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The gamer responses from last autumn’s the game testing phase was revealing. It validated the promise of a action-packed game but indicated we still had refinements needed. It uncovered the requirement for a clearer brand.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve come. You accepted the feedback to mind and overhauled the title with a revitalized vision - one that’s ready to deliver on its promise to our players.
The trust in Project ETHOS strengthens every day. To advance the remarkable development you’ve made, I am thrilled to introduce Ben Brinkman as the incoming Director of 31st Union. After a period of talks, he starts with us on next week.
His leadership and experience in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having dedicated the recent years developing and leading some of the most well-known franchises in the industry, such as the acclaimed shooter, and lately, the battle royale hit.
Let’s together in welcoming Ben soon. We are all eager to keep witnessing the progress of the game in the time to follow.
The President
Experience of the New Head
Brinkman currently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at Respawn Entertainment for their flagship title. Brinkman previously was employed at major gaming companies in various production roles on the Call of Duty games, and, before that, had periods at other industry leaders.
Title Information and Vision
The upcoming game was announced in last year in conjunction with a community playtest. At the time, the developers described the game as a "free-to-play, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting advancement on the style."
"Create your ideal gameplay session—or face defeat—in this engaging over-the-shoulder adventure! Customize your character in real-time to suit your personal playstyle," the description states. "Take on the opponents with new abilities, stakes, and tests that evolve every round. Will you withdraw carefully with your valuable rewards? Or go big, gamble everything, and trust your team can achieve the highest spot? The option is in your hands."
The game has not yet received an official release date or consoles, but players can expect additional details as development continues.
