Right-leaning reactions to the limited disclosure of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some backers of the former Trump administration pointing out the noticeable presence of Bill Clinton and other Democratic figures in photographs, while different voices expressed frustration over how heavy censorship cast Donald Trump and Republicans in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Rhetoric
Justice Department officials justified the heavily censored sections with fervent hyperbole. “Never in American history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been so open with the American people about such a sensitive legal matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo describing the censorship process.
Concerns Prompted by Blacked-Out Sections
While the former president's identity and likeness appear in some of the documents, the widespread redactions raise serious concerns about what may be hidden behind them. A number of Republicans immediately demanded greater transparency.
“People are furious and disengaging,” wrote Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Congressman Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the law, and implied that a future Congress may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that violation. “Regrettably, today’s document release egregiously does not comply with both the spirit and the wording of the law,” he added.
A Faction of Conservative Commentators Swing In Support of the Release
But, some rightwing commentators and Trump loyalists came out strongly in support of the Justice Department's actions.
The release—from a justice department led by close Trump ally Pam Bondi—includes hundreds of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in photographs have their faces obscured.
Yet a few are not, featuring prominent individuals like Bill Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and scholar Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, in particular, enabled certain rightwing figures to go on the offensive.
“It’s quite rich how the Democrats wrongly accused President Trump of being a sex offender, only for the Trump DOJ to unveil Epstein files that show Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a convicted sex offender,” stated right-wing commentator Laura Loomer.
“Recently released Epstein Files reveal Bill Clinton without a shirt in a hot tub with a woman that is not his spouse Hillary Clinton,” posted attorney Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one reason Epstein would photograph a US President with a girl in a jacuzzi: Leverage.”
Former President Spokesperson Issues Statement
Clinton has repeatedly stated he was aware of no criminal actions by Epstein and has not been accused to have participated in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been concealing those files for an extended period only to dump them at the last minute on a Friday to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s representative Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about protecting officials from future revelations, or from what they’ll try and conceal permanently. Therefore they can publicize as many grainy decades-old photos as they desire, but it is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, not ever be,” the statement concluded.
Broader Rightwing Commentary Seems Muted
However, broader comment on the right was relatively subdued after the disclosure, particularly when juxtaposed against the loud demands for transparency that came before the congressional approval to pass a law requiring the documents' release.
Loomer, who recently secured press credentials at the Defense Department, had been among the most vocal proponents for a full release. Earlier this year, she chastised the administration broadly and Bondi in particular after a group of rightwing personalities were given physical folders of files that contained little previously unseen data.
