This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Has the Power to Test Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Sit down with your partner and view Together. The critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its launch on a streaming platform on Hulu. On the surface, it could look like typical body horror, but inside Together exists a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together represents the introductory feature for director Michael Shanks. It features Dave Franco and Alison Brie as a couple named Tim and Millie, a pair who are not married that have stayed together for a decade. United in marriage in real life in 2017, the actors infuse a unique chemistry to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The narrative commences when the couple relocate from the urban environment to the rural area for Millie’s job. A somewhat stereotypical plot device, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes cease. Together transforms into as much a psychological exploration of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

A Supernatural Catalyst

While hiking near their country house, a violent storm occurs, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After being trapped overnight there and finally finding a way out, a strange force starts to affect the couple. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes far beyond simple connection.

The complete narrative is a gradually intensifying of scares, blending moments of hallucinatory nightmares, unsettling (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and authentically humorous dialogue (sometimes amidst something grotesque). Michael Shanks orchestrates these parts neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is solely the performances of its stars, and they deftly portray manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and emotional bond is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her underlying frustration of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand experiences isolation and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He dreads the concept of utterly sacrificing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he can’t drive and relies on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the clear bad guy.

Tim and Millie grapple with the sort of issues that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they still love one another. They share moments of joy, provide solace, and share intimately at times. But beneath it all, there’s an inescapable current of uncertainty about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the otherworldly presence in Together act as a metaphor for these anxieties of excessive reliance and fully committing to another person, the symbolism does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these visceral horror elements present a brilliant analogue to the relationship narrative. Both the frights and the fights serve the other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which is best experienced firsthand, has left audiences divided on the film’s ultimate message about unhealthy partnerships. Reports indicate that those not in relationships have interpreted the film as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, a few pairs who were in conflict found that the film ultimately assisted them reconcile.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could act as a great barometer of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you identify in Tim or Millie and feel frustration, or simply glance toward your partner and utter, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an test you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
